You didn't mention which kind of turkeys you had. I'm guessing that heritage type birds which are slower growing can eat a SLIGHTLY lower protein than a BBW or BBB. THe benefit of the higher protein for the BBB/BBW is that these birds are bred for VERY FAST growth rate and need the higher protein to maximize the growth. Having said that, wild turkey poults eat insects as their primary food in the early weeks, then add in more vegetation as they get older.
I had to do some reading of feed tags to find a suitable turkey feed; one company considers 22% as turkey feed; I bet it is ok for older birds but not chicks. oops poults. My 8 BBW at 2 1/2 weeks eat a shocking amount of feed and are already 3 times the size of the marans which are the exact same age and eat the same feed ( they are brooded together)!
