My girls' favorite treat? Japanese Beetles! (I do hope they're not bad for them but they're showing no ill effects.) I knock the beetles off my husband's roses into a container of boiling water (instant demise) then when I have a full container I let it cool, then pour it out for the girls. you never saw a chicken move so fast

My chickens love fresh veggies and fruit. I have a farmer's market that I go to and I also pick up a few heads of lettuce just for my chickens. I also give them zucchini, I grind it up in the food processor until it's diced up and they love it. We have plenty of Japaneses beetles around but my chickens just avoid them, they do like other bugs though.

I am wondering if eating scraps and veggies will make the girls too fat to want to lay. Do you free feed the treats, fruits and stuff, like the photo of the broccoli? what's your take on this. Also, how much oyster shell calcium? Do you mix it or put it in a separate container?

Mine are laying before they were expected to by a month, and they haven't gotten fat. They are eating Layena feed which has extra calcium, and their favorite treats are watermelon, cantaloupe and tomatoes. They will eat romaine lettuce, but it doesn't cause the excitement of juicy fruits. Easiest way to get them back in the run after they've been loose in the yard. Show up with a tomato cut in half and call them. They surround me so fast if I'm in sandals I have to worry about my toes. Whatever bugs they get they catch themselves.

Heck, I'm a cheese lover - I'd never want to share it with my girls!

But if you want to, I'm sure it would be a good treat, in small quantities. There's a lot of pure fat in cheese, and also you don't want a bunch of constipated chickens.

That made me chuckle.

I'm still in Kansas!

My chickens LOVE it when I pick mulberries or blackberries off the tree. I froze a few and am going to see if they will eat them. It's blazing hot here (101 heat index), as usual for summer. Maybe the frozen ones will cool them down a bit.

Been given my girls frozen fruit as treats in the hot afternoons the last few days, and they seem to be panting much less. I believe it is helping. They get a sweet treat that keeps them cool AND hydrates them.

Chickensickles. LOL.
