Feedback on Learning Center "Treats Chart"

It lasts a long time. The reason I know this is because I started some indoors in May, brought the little tray out to the coop for the girls, and they tugged at it so hard, the whole dirt ball came out of the tray. Then they'd trample it.

I put the clump back in the tray, removed it from the coop and it lasted pretty all summer on our deck.

Suggestion: Start it in a heavy container.

"you can hypnotize a chicken with fish!" - typed a moment ago by DD Christina

We just came in from giving the chooks a midday feast of freezer burned fish, safflower seed, and pasta. My daughter enjoys swinging a strip of fish - "hypnotist style" - to get them excited.

We also use a suet cage to hold some other treats like cooked niblet ear corn or overripe fruit. We had some leftover odd fruit like a red cactus fruit and mango that went in yesterday and are mostly gone.

There are sooooooo many toxic plants listed...I wanted my birds to free range, but with 4 acres, I don't think I could possibly keep every toxic seed out of my yard. I was thinking of planting some Privets around their coop to give them a place to run and hide if a hawk is overhead but that plant is toxic. Is there a list of plants that are considered beneficial to chickens?

I think what you are asking is about plants that are non-toxic and especially landscaping plants. Right?

Obviously, there are food plants.

UCDavis had a nice list of "safe plants" but that page seems to be down the last few days.

Here is a very helpful pdf file from the Oregon Health & Science University. "NON-TOXIC PLANT LIST - The 'GOOD' Plants"

I hope that helps.

This is a great list! I just took out a small bowl of plain yogurt and my 3 hens loved it - hadn't thought of yogurt before. They do love cottage cheese though. Thanks very much for putting this together.

Toooften, I grab something in my kitchen and wonder if it's safe for my bird?
