what is the size of the opening at the bottom of your feeder. i made one like this but my opening is 3.5 in. my chickens just scatter all the feed out on to the ground. am thinking of cutting down the size of opening.
schwartfarmnc - what size are your pvc feeders and do you feed pellet crumble or mash? i am so tired of playing the feeder game, i have tried 2 inch pvc with 90 degree angles, then 45s and the feed wouldnt come thru, now i have exactly what you have in 3inch and the mash gets flung all over of the floor and stepped on, what a waste! i am so stumped and upset ive spent too much on feeders because of re-doing them all and now they still dont work! i have them set up just as you do only on the outside of the pen doors and with the feeder opening thru the door to the inside so i am able to fill from outside. any ideas on why mine are able to fling it all out and waste so much? what could i do to fix it?
I did use the 3 inch pvc pipe and Y fittings, the bottom is filled with sand so the feed/crumble sits on top and ours has no issues with the feed dispensing. We raise ours when the girls grow so they can only get their necks in to feed, so no waste. I've heard that the 90 degree's the feed will get stuck, but with the Y fittings and sand I have never experienced that issue. I don't know if I've been able to answer your questions fully, but I hope maybe someone else can chime in too.
Here's the one I made, it holds about 35 pounds or so. I never really weighed itwhen full. I do know hat a 50# bag fills both this one and the smaller one inside the coop, up to their brims.
which reminds me,...
I need to go to the feed store right now, and pick up another bag
I glued the plastic cap on the inside of the Y fitting, then you fill the bottom of the Y with sand so the feed comes out right on top of the sand and you don't have old feed down in the bottom of the Y fitting. I believe the poster used a screen so the crumbles would not get by the cap, but I turned the Y fitting over and glued the grid cap to the bottom and then filled it with the sand.
