Feeders can be dangerous to older chicks. I knew some ours were missing & was shocked when I found them dead, days later, in the round neck entrances of our 50lb feeder. They suffocated.

It nearly happened again, this week, but fortunately, the feeder was low. One chick was sitting in the center of the box & the other one was stuck in the curve of the pipe. It was quite horrifying.

I think I need to put in some kind of barrier. Any one else experience this or know a solution?

Happy chucking! Mi

It sounds like a port feeder, the PVC waste drain pipe and bucket style.

But yes, nearly all port feeders AND treadle feeders are NOT for chicks and poults. They are for full grown chickens.

That said, if you have a treadle feeder, even a poorly designed one, will keep rodent populations down or nonexistent. You can get buy during the brief time that you need to feed poults until they are large enough to use the feeder while a larger bird is eating.

But there are always some risks with feeders. Like we say in Oklahoma, farm animals are never completely safe around moving machinery or Oklahoma State Senators.
