feeders

any ideas of how to get my feeders to stay upright? They are the long ones that have holes all along the top. I tried hanging them, but the chickens just ran underneath and tipped it over that way. I sat them on the floor and the walk on them and tip them over that way.

I put my feeders on wood blocks so that they're off the floor but the chickens can still reach them. It keeps them cleaner.

I had the same problem and eventually got a hanging feeder so I wouldn't lose so much food to waste.

However, when I was using that kind of feeder I did find one thing that worked. I used a 2x6 for the base. Then cut 2 smaller boards (a 1x2 or 2x2 work fine) and nail them onto the top edges of the 2x6 leaving a space between them for the feeder to sit down into. The two side boards 'hold' the feeder in place and it can't be tipped over. I hope that makes sense, I don't have a picture.

How big are the chicks??? You want them at the same height as top of thier back. I would put them up on 4x4, 2x4 screw feeder to blocks crossways so chicks would have to raise feeder foot into the air to tip it. as chicks grow add another 2x4 I also went to a hanging feeder then to one that is mounted on the wall they will have to knock down the wall to tip it now.

I had to give up on those chick feeders. I wish I'd seen y'all's suggestions with the boards. My chickens always kicked them FULL of litter (it's like they packed it in on purpose ... I have no idea how they did that!), dumped them over, poo'ed all in them .... sigh, it was a mess. I finally gave up and started feeding in open dishes. Which I don't really like either, but actually the feed stays much cleaner and they waste less. But I'm looking for a new design right now.

I made my own feeder. I have 23 white leghorns. Took a 5' section of alum. gutter and put the ends on it. I then bent over the the sharp edge (the side that would be against the house facia board)
Screwed two 1' pieces of wood to the bottom so it wouldn't tip. ( 1 on each end ) Works great! Plus, the feed STAYS in the feeder. I thought about fastening it to the coop wall, but it would be harder to clean that way. Dan
