Hi,
I know there are a few similar threads, but I've not found this question addressed directly. My apologies in advance if I missed it somewhere.
We have a mixed flock of 7 hens (all female - various breeds, ages, and sizes) and 7 muskovie ducks (male and female). Hypothetically, the hens eat a high quality layer pellet (neutrena hearty hen layer pellet, 18% protein) and the ducks eat mazuri waterfowl maintenance diet, but I find them sharing each other's food on a regular basis.
They all also get some 7 grain scratch each day and usually some dried meal worms, along with water. There is no practical way for me to keep them apart or to separate the food, due to the set up of my coops and the fact that some ducks prefer to sleep in the hen house.
I've tried "all flock" but no one really likes it.
I'll just add that they've been living like this for over a year and so far everyone seems happy and healthy with the sharing of feed, but it just nags at me. With this in mind, can anyone help me to figure out:
- is it safe for chicken to eat mazuri waterfowl maintenance feed (14% protein)?
- is it safe for my male and female muskovie ducks to eat 18% protein, soy free, layer pellets designed for hens?
Thanks.
