Feeding Alfalfa Hay

I am going to try the cubes and get a few flakes of alfalfa off of my sister (she feeds this to her horses), just want to make sure they like it before I invest in a bale and cubes.

Ok. Next question. What are Alfalfa Flakes?
Also, when the Cubes breakdown, what is the consistency? What do you do with it?

Flakes or pads is just a break in the bale of hay so you can break it off the bale without pulling the entire bale of hay apart. Each bale of hay comes with a certain amount of flakes/pads in it.

As far as the cubes, you just break the cubes up and add water to it. The water makes the hard, compressed alfalfa cube break down into what looks similar to thawed (previously frozen) box of spinach. I would assume after it breaks down into a sloppy mash sort of thing you just put it in a dish and let your chickies have at it.

You guys are paying insane prices.
I rent out my three hay fields to a local farmer.
He is doing well to get $35 for each large round bale 4-5 feet diameter.

I cannot believe the prices of alfalfa here. I figured the farther north you went, it would be cheaper, but not according to our poster from Maine at $24/bale.

i give my horses alfala pellets in the winter cause even in fl. the grass don't grow in the winter. this is my first winter with chickens so I'll probably be giving it to them too. It runs about 13 bucks for a 50 lb. bag. You might want to try it.
