Feeding chicken to chickents

I checked with my source in the feed biz and they confirm that poultry by-product meal is sometimes used in poultry feed. Poultry meal is a higher priced commodity used more in pet food. So that means that so far poultry byproduct meal has not been shown to transmit disease.

I was grilling some chicken last night. The girls came over and were watching. So I cooled them off a piece and tossed it out into the grass. They loved it. And probably had no clue what it was. And I didn't wake up this moring to them eating each other. Business as usual. My husband was quite disturbed by what I did, but I just had to see if they liked it. It's not something I'd do on a regular basis, but was curious.

When I last butchered a bird, the free-range flock quickly gathered around me in a circle. They had no reason to expect food, but they jumped all over every drop of blood, skin, or guts that they could get to. Now when we process animals, all that stuff goes to the chickens. Whether it is chicken or other animals. They like it, and they eat it naturally. I would not feed them a sick one though, any more than I would eat it myself.

Important distinction... Cattle are herbivores, chickens are omnivores. Feeding any kind of meat to cattle is not all that intelligent. Whereas chickens evolved to eat some meat and are quite cannibalistic. They naturally eat any of their own that get sick or injured and evolved to handle it. I believe a large part of the problem with illness also comes from feeding brain matter which is mostly inaccessible to a chicken.

We do not feed raw eggs or meat to our chickens.

We cook it first. Just like we wash, dry and crush the egg shells and feed that back to them.

They get all our table scraps, Matter of fact, they like the scraps better than their mash!

Not sure if anyone has seen "The Social Network" yet but one of the main characters gets an animal cruelty citation for feeding his chicken cooked chicken from the Harvard dining hall as part of hazing to joing a club. I laughed out loud because the night before we were feeding the leftover grilled chicken bits to the chooks off the back deck! No one else thought it was very funny but I doubt anyone in the movie theater raised chickens.

I have always fed my chickens any left over chuicken or turkey .. They LOVE it.... As long as it is cooked properly I dont see any problem with it

I agree wit this post. I have read and heard many times that it is not okay to feed any animal protein from their own species! I went to agricultural school and that was always mentioned in every class whether it was in Poultry, Swine, Cattle, etc. It definately makes sense as it has been documented to cause disease and therefore I wouldn't go there, ever.

My roo, Chicken-Butt, just so happens to love Vienna sausages and Chicken burgers... like the kind you get at burger king. It seems so wrong but he has no idea.
