I tried ground black pepper for a few days to jump-start laying after a molt of three of my hens. No positive results. Today I'm going to start using a red pepper (whatever I find in my pantry). Red pepper is hotter than black pepper. This should warm up the girls and turn their combs red again!
I love reading different ideas. This is a good thread and I want to find it again,so I'm marking it.I used to use a light but When it blewout and I forgot to change it after awhile I noticed that there was no change.I think it has to do with an individuals set up.
Ooooops didn't mean to post twice, was referring to your hen cam
Thank you Hamilton. Glad you like the hencam. I see the girls are hiding in the shade right now. I'll see if they will come out for a treat.
Has anyone used tobasco sauce? It has the same heat rating as cayanne pepper. I think I will try it. I'll mix it with a little cottage cheese and let you know if it warms up my girls.
So idk if it was just coincidence or the pepper but I had 2 pullets that were not laying and a aracauna pullet that I bought earlier this month that had yet to lay for me. I gave the girls a bunch of pepper yesterday in their scratch and sure enough yesterday I got a softshell pullet egg in the afternoon, today a cute pullet egg in the nest and a grayish green araucana egg! I usually get 2-3 BR eggs and 1 silkie egg from one or the other of my 2 laying silkie hens so goin from 3-4 eggs per day (1-2 daily this last week) then getting 5 today was great! Either way Im not givin pepper for a few days to see what happens. I will give it again next week for a whole week in a row. Maybe then all the @#*% food gobbling silkie pullets I have will start laying
well we got a total of 4 eggs over the weekend, and one yesterday... since the pepper is the only thing different from before(when they weren't laying squat), I am assuming that it is making a difference... gonna keep giving them some mixed in their feed for a while longer, and see if it picks up any more...
