Tips for finding the perfect feed for your chickens please. My mom’s chickens keep getting deformed eggs and they’re young chickens. I have started feeding Purina Layer Chicken feed hoping it will help make normal eggs. I was feeding Layer feed from Tractor Supply. My usual to go is Dumor Chicken Feed but that just makes there egg yolks firm and give them a firm egg shell.

Could you please explain your problem with firm yolks and firm shells? To me, that is a success.

You say they are young. How long have they been laying? Are you getting any regular eggs? How many deformed eggs are you getting? Could you post photos of your deformed eggs? That might help us more than anything.

My hope is that it is just start-up problems or that one pullet/hen is having issues, most posts like this are one of those. But it would be good to be sure.

What is best feed for 4 month old chickens
I have Rhode Island reds, lavender and leg horns. I believe they are getting ready to lay

I had the same issue with my girls when they first started laying. Some weird-shaped eggs, soft shells, all of it. It’s pretty normal for young hens at first, but feed can definitely make a difference. I’ve used Purina Layer too and my flock seems to like it — the eggs got better after a couple weeks.
I’d also make sure they have oyster shell available on the side. Even with layer feed, they sometimes don’t get enough calcium from just that. Dumor was okay for me, but like you said, the yolks were firm and the shells were a bit too hard. Every flock reacts a bit different though.
Give the Purina some time and maybe toss in some oyster shell and see if things improve. It usually evens out once their system settles.
