feeding chickens

Some publications are pro commercial feed and some are pro free range. It all depends on the opinion of the author. If natural is what you're going for, then free range would be the ticket. You could also keep non GMO feed out for them with oyster shells when they get to laying age.
 
It really depends on what else you are feeding and how much you are lowering the protein %. Young chickens need lots of protein to grow properly. Mamma hen will know what they need, but if you don't watch the protein content carefully, they won't develop as fast or maybe even right. I'm not saying yours won't, I just don't offer much beside a little green stuff before they are 10-12 weeks old. Besides the protein level, you are changing the amino acid & vitamin profiles. Just my 2 cents.
