You're not going to lose any, they just will not grow as fast. I have had plenty of chicks that a hen hatches out that grows on layer feed. However they did free range for other food all summer long. From time to time I do give my broilers chicks layer feed when I have to. That's not very often and it's only for a day or two until I can get to the mill. It doesn't seem to phase them.
I would put them on a 16 % grower before a layer though... this way it's a more geared towards growing then egg production.
