I raise 50 cornish every year. I don't notice much difference in either taste or livability between the feed store or Murray. I just buy the cheapest ones. Sometimes the feed store will have them too long and reduce the price. I get out of at least a weeks feed and get a cheaper bird too. Beside the fact that they usually die the most in the first week. It is certain that you will lose several birds. I have always raised them in a shed with no outside at all so that they didn't get to move around much. I always thought this would be kind of like the difference between a caged raised rabbit and a wild one. Plumper, softer, blander meat vs lighter, tougher, stronger tasting meat. We have been doing this for 20 years and I'm not sure what a store bought chicken even tastes like anymore. Cleaning the house floor is pretty much a daily chore. After reading about the pasture raised layers (mine always were), I have decided to run my CX in a chicken tractor for 3 to 5 weeks depending on the weather. I have already built one of Plamondon's hoop houses. Birds are 1 week old now and are brooded in the cattle stock tank as we don't have cattle this year. I will post if we can tell any difference in taste or consistency.
