feeding for chicks

We feed our chickens rice and again as previously mention coconut pulp is a good source, we blend our own fresh coconuts in a blender. We will add DE and some feed to our steamed rice we feed our chickens they love it. Supplement them with lots of vegetables and occasionally we buy fresh shrimp and give them the heads and shells they love em.

Re: organic chick feed.....

I just bought some at the Blue Seal feed store here yesterday. It is called Blue Seal Organic Life starter/broiler Crumbles. A 50# bag cost $22.70, or about $10 more than the regular medicated chick starter mash. It is USDA Organic certified..... but I don't know where the prtoein comes from. I could go out and look on the bag when I get dressed if you want to know. The lieterature says to feed them this from 0-8 weeks, and then switch to "Grower Crumbles" which have less protein and fat, until 20 weeks, then on to Layer pellets (if you choose to do all prepared feed).

The lady sold me a 50# bag for 6 chicks, said they would eat it..... but the literature says they will only need 2.5 to 3 # in that 8 weeks, so 3 x 6 = 18#... now I am worried that I got waaaaaay too much! Can I mix it in with their other food when they are older or will all that extra protien and fat be detrimental at that time? We don't have the chicks yet so I could return it and get the smaller bag (25#) of regular (non-organic) stuff if you think I'd waste a good amount of my 50#.
