Feeding maggots from the compost, okay?

I put veggies, fruits and chicken poop with straw in my compost. For now, saving it up for winter when it's all broken down. I haven't put anything in for about a month.

I just cleaned the coop, then went to put the poop in, and saw some big black covered maggots. Smelled horrible, by the way.

I scooped up a handful with my gloves and threw to my chickens. Now I'm thinking I should have rinsed them.

Was this okay????

Maybe safe, maybe not at all. If the maggots are into anaerobic material, and have botulinum toxin, really really bad!
Digging through compost that doesn't include meat is fine, but I'd never offer anything like this, especially if the smell was off.
