As far as feeding goes is is worth it to buy all the ingredients in bulk and then mix them myself? Or is that just silly... I have found $12 40lb bags of what I believe I am supposed to feed them. I have also just purchased 1000 meal worms and will start that process as soon as they arrive. I am not sure if I am making it harder on myself or easier/cheaper... I am up to my eye balls in information but can't seem to get anyone to tell me YES it is worth it... I am also not "up" on what they need as far as nutrition though I am working on reading up on it. I have 6 chicks and 2 ducks and have had them for 2 weeks tomorrow. They have eaten a 10lb bag of grower crumbles so far but we have had a lot of waste because of the ducks. Now that I have separated the ducks from the chicks the waste has went down a lot. I plan to let them free range in their run and will have a tractor run to give them some variety, will be giving them scraps, and then feed full time. Thank you in advance!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! If you have to buy all the ingredients, I don't see how you can mix your own food in small quantities for less than you can buy the commercial foods for if cheaper/easier is your main reason for diy. You might look into fermenting feeds, it seems to be a good way to stretch feed. Here is a nice website that has collected a lot of recipes http://www.birdfarm.bravepages.com/eggsx.html and a good one for ingredients http://www.poultryhub.org/nutrition/feed-ingredients/

Good luck with your chicken raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know! Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! Glad to have you with us. Kelsie had already given you the good links!

Sorry, it most probably will not be cost effective to try and mix your own feed... you are talking for eight birds?

Welcome to BYC!

I mix my own grains to make my own home brew layer feed. I have never really added it up down to the penny, but I believe it is cheaper to feed them this way, over bagged feed. Chickens that eat whole grains eat far less food than they do of bagged feed. And my birds seem more healthy as well. But I am not in this for profit either. Just for the joy of doing it. So it is really up to you.

Good luck with all your adventures and welcome to our flock!
