Feeding my ducks and geese grit??

Mine won't eat it out of a feeder either. But they pig out on it if I place it in the palm of my hand. I thought I was doing the right thing by giving them a feeder cup of grit but they never touched it and their poop came out a watered down version of their goose crumbles. Made me wonder if they are even "processing" what they eat. I have no idea of what I'm doing, honestly. They are 2 1/2 weeks old and I have them inside the house because I live in the north and it's still too cool outside. I took them outside for a stroll on what I thought was a nice day a few days ago and a few hours later, one was dead. I try very hard but seem to be failing.
