Feeding my Jumbo Cornish X Rocks for 4-H project

Use the medicated feed! On our last batch Feb-April we decided to do non-medicated feed. The birds tractor was moved to new unused field every day. We lost 18 of 51 birds to Cocci. Then had to use SulfMet to prevent the loss of remaining birds, and still lost a few more. Medication used at the end also means delaying processing date for safety reasons. Even the birds that survived were underwieght. It was a tough lesson to learn. Now we will always use MEDICATED CHICK STARTER!

I am not an expert on this. (Disclaimer)
I understand cocci needs to be presented to the chicks while on medicated feed for the medicine to assist the chicks immune system build resistence.
That means if the chicks are in the brooder on shavings while on medicated feed, with no exposure to cocci, then the medicated feed is not doing anything. If you are raising them on dirt where there is a possibility of exposure to cocci, then medicated feed will help them become resistant to cocci.
Hope this helps? I have not used medicated feed for my meaties.
Good luck

Start them on medicated and continue for two weeks after they are outside and that will build the resistence. We have a lot of feral cats so I use medicated; better safe than sorry.

What are you feeding yours? We have them on nonmedicated game bird feed with 24% protein. Should we keep them on this the entire time? What's the theory/benefit of switching over to clay cat litter and when shoud it be done? Ours just turned three weeks. Thanks for your help.
