feeding pumpkin to chickens?

Our chickens didn't even wait for the pumpkins to fully ripen in the garden! Actually I think the chickens got more of the pumpkins than we did this year!

My chickens love all kinds of squash and melons. I'm planning on saving a bunch in my cellar so they can have fresh treats in the winter. I usually break them up and they eat the whole thing eventually. Good to know the seeds are useful as a wormer. I have heard that about hot peppers too - my turkeys love those!

We made Jack-o-Lanterns last night and threw the pulp on the ground. I let the girls out this morning and they followed me (like they always do) to the picnic area. They went nuts when they found the pumpkin innerds. I'm sure they'll enjoy the Jack-O-Lantern left overs next week too. LOL SHould be nice and soft by then.

I got over 30 pumpkins this year. Everyone gets some, the girls, us, the freezer, family, friends; and they stay for a long time in the food storage. I love the pic of the chickens eating from the holes.

I'd love to try that... The grandkids will get a kick out of it.

my girls love watermelon... so I am thinking that I should try giving them a pumpkin... thanks for the idea!

Well, this year we planted some little eating pumpkins and we only got two...

So, we fixed them all up and put it in the fridge to make a pie with later... Well, OF COURSE!

We forgot that it was in there and found it a lil' runny and yuck! So, I went out and fed it to the birds... I didn't realize they would like it so much! They were hiding it and running with it! It looked so funny:

Oh my word! They were absolutely bonkers over that stuff! AND OF COURSE! My little half blind chicky ran up to me and ate off from the spoon (from my shoulder)! LOL she is SOOO spoiled!

I cut the top off a small pumpkin and put both the top and the whole pumpkin into the run this afternoon. Not only has there been a whole lot of interest in it, with several picking out the seeds, Shirley picking out seeds AND pulp and putting it down for her 3 chicks, but my dachshund snuck into the run and stole the top with the stem.

He brought it into the house to gnaw it down to nothing on his dog bed. *sigh*

I'll take a picture of the pumpkin tomorrow, hopefully with some chicken nibbling at it.
