I am looking into getting some chickens for my back yard and I was wondering how many lbs. of feed would I go through per week with about 30-35 Standard chickens & how much money on feed would I use for these birds?

Thanks

Welcome to BYC.
I'm in West GA also.
With 16 chickens I go through about 13 lbs. a week, but mine free range a couple of hours a day 5 days a week, and this doesn't count the treats I give them.

30-35 chickens feeding only on feed would eat about 40lbs a week in my estimate.

I would guess high, call it 50 lbs a week at about $11 per bag of feed it that doesn't fit into budget, cut back on number of chickens(you'll add to original # anyway, be forwarned and no one on BYC will advise you to not get more)

Thanks . . . I will be able to handle 11 dollars a week & they would free range on the weekends . . .

This is a great site for info from people who know about chickens.

Hey, Rooster Red, what knid of predators do you deal with in our part of Georgia. I am thinking the usual, racoons, hawks, coyotes, and maybe a few bobcats.

The amount of feed will vary depending on how much your chickens freerange and/or get bugs and greens.....

I have 11 chickens and 5 ducks on 6/10 acre....chickens eat maybe 1 Cup feed/week as they prefer "wild food" Ducks eat 1-2 cups/day.
