Feeding Scraps To Chickens

Have you tried baking the peels? That is how my girls like them.

I've heard/read that chickens should never have raw potatoes (raw skins). I don't know if it toxic or what but I hear that is on the "no-no" list.
I give my chickens all leftovers. Noodles are their favorite, Ramen or speghetti, they love it all!

They won't eat the raw potato peels because it will make them sick. Potatoes are in the nightshade family (as are tomatoes, don't let them have tomato plants) and have a very upsetting effect on their digestion. Cooked potato peels are okay and they should like those.

Mine arent particularly fond of raw carrot peels and hard veggies like broccoli stalks. So one day I decided to boil all the veggie scraps until they were between tender and a bit mushy (but still held it's shape.) Needless to say, they LOVED it!! Especially since carrots turn everything sweet when boiled

My chickens had warm oatmeal this am mixed with pheasant, corn, steak trimmings, and scrambled egg. (found a hidden nest and broke 3 more

) They were so noisey with it, I thought my broody was going to jump out of her brooder tank wanting some. I gave her and her 10 chickies a bit. Those little ones were pretty impressed.

My chickens are really picky. I thought i'd be nice and make them oatmeal one morning and it sat out there, untouched, all day until I brought it in that night. They LOVE bread (too bad it's not the greatest for them), apples (throw a whole one out there) and bananas. Other things that you'd think they'd like go untouched until the dog goes out and cleans up. lol

My chickens have access to the compost bins. Their aid in composting is one of my favorite things about them. Anything that goes into the compost that they want, they can eat. What they like most of all, however, are the roaches that live in the compost. When I turn it over and see a huge icky sewer roach scuttle out, I make a clicking noise (the same as I do when I call them for food) and the hens know that there's a treat for them.

I give them shells too, but I crush them first so that they don't look like shells. I don't want the girls to get the idea that eggs are something they ought to be pecking at.

I've never heard the deal with tomatoes and potatoes! Good to know....especially since we go through a lot of meat and taters here.
Any produce that starts to get a little icky in our fridge gets tossed in the coop.
Oatmeal is a good idea!
All the meat stuffs though we give to the barn cats. I dont need to attract raccoons and other vermin into my coop if they dont eat it.

My flock eats any thing I put in the run! I fed them fried fish yesterday and they loved it!
