I just picked up my chicks from the feedmill this morning, I bought 15 laying hens and they told me when I picked them up they had been started on water. I was wondering how long the chicks should have food for during the day? And then do I take it away in the evening? Or can they have their food all the time. Eventually they will be free range when they are old enough to leave the coop.

Welcome to BYC!

Chicks need to have food 24/7. So just leave it out all day. They don't eat or drink at night, so you can take it way then, but during the day, leave it out for them to free feed when ever they need it.

I leave food out 24/7 for chicks, they won't over eat. I have always felt they can eat it they feel hungry, you want them to thrive.
