Feeding tubes not working out like I thought.

I've seen people add a small piece to extend the Y up or you could try raising it some. I like the DIY no waste feeder style the best.

Mine is like that one, but I used a trashcan.

The trashcan sides slope inwards so surprisingly all of the feed stays dry... I can keep it out in the run.

In nasty winters I bring it into the shed, because snow can blow into the ports and get feed wet that way. (Haven't had that problem with rain...but we do tend to have "gentle" rain.)

Anyway, there were a couple of ports where they managed to pull a bit of feed dust out, so I added collars on those pipes with duct tape so I could easily adjust how long the pipe was that stuck out.

Now zero feed is pulled out. Chickens do great with it.

Even my muscovy ducks have learned how to eat from it.

Also, being a trashcan, EASY TO FILL!!

Here is my version.

I don't like the pipe feeders made with a y-fitting because that angle IMO makes it too easy for them to rake, which is just a natural response. I use 90-elbows on mine and have not had the same problem because they have to lift the feed straight up and then out, which is a lot harder than simply raking it up a 45-degree ramp onto the ground.

They can still feed and really can’t dig deep enough into the feeder to make a mess. I will fill in the hole when the spring chicks need to use it.

So I went to Lowe's bought a small food grade bucket and used the eye bolt method where they peck at it to drop food. That has actually been working well. One thing to remember is to use the layer crumble as it falls through easier than the pellets when the bolt is pecked. I did also raise the tube as recommended earlier and that has also worked from keeping them from scooping it all out. Once it stops snowing I will post pictures.

Oh nice i like that idea. Some of the smaller hens seem to have harder of a time reaching so I will for sure try that. Thanks for sharing.
