I'm a little ashamed to admit this, but one of my hens has been displaying some rather embarrassing behaviour recently... she's been pecking me!

I only have two hens, a BO, who is top hen, and a bluebelle hybrid. Until recently they seemed to accept me as the big lump that supplied the food and tried to get cuddles with them (pretty easily with the BO, but the bluebelle has never been remotely keen).

However, the last few times I have been sitting out with them in their pen, especially if I'm having a cuddle with the BO, the bluebelle has been pecking at me - tugging my clothes, trying to get at my shirt sleeves, picking at the rivets on my jeans, pecking my knees, and generally acting strangely. I thought to start with that she was mistaking my rivets and buttons for possible morsels of food, but she has now started grabbing beakfuls of clothes and tugging and pulling at them, really shaking her head around! (She hasn't tried getting hold of any of my skin yet, just clothes and shoes.)

I tried picking her up in case it was jealously, but no, she still hates cuddles as much as ever and made a huge fuss to be set down again.

Is it possible that I'm bottom of the pecking order now? The BO, at the top, never tries to peck me, so why should her second-in-command be doing it?

It's all a bit embarrassing really... to think that it's possible that a chicken thinks it's better than me!

I wouldn't say that. I had a barred rock, which was my favorite by the way, and she'd always peck at my feet when ever I'd go outside. She was such a character! I just loved her to pieces. I don't think your hen hates you, quite the opposite. Some chickens don't like being cuddled, thats all. She may be one of them. I think its pretty cute! Don't worry to much.

Aw, thanks for that! I was beginning to worry that she'd got me pegged as the lowest of the flock!

Perhaps she is just attention-seeking, and secretly actually likes me - it does seem to mostly happen after I have given treats or am cuddling up to the other girl.

Bless!

My Leghorn hen only likes me when I have food.. She'll fluff up at me a make her mad noises and then go after my feet or hands if she can get to them. I've tried everything to make her stop but so far I just grab her by the legs and lay her on the ground for 5 minutes, but 30 minutes laters she's back at me again lol

I've been 'working from home' today and have spent a lot of time outside with the girls as a result (naughty of me!).

And I can definitely confirm that they are both tugging at me now! My husband thinks it's sweet and just means they both want my attention.

It does seem to increase if I'm giving the other girl a cuddle or talking to her - the 'ignored' one will circle me and tug at my clothes!

Bless!
