3 years ago, my cousin, an elementary school teacher who knew I wanted chickens gave me 5 hatchlings from her class. I ended up with 4 roosters and one hen. Needless to say, changes were in order and 3 roosters went on a road trip to a rooster rescue three hours from my home. I kept a Sicilian Marans rooster, Mick, and the white leghorn hen, Nona. The next year I added 6 hens; 2 Black jersey giants, Opal and Pearl; 2 buff orpingtons, MeiMei and June; 1 Easter egger, Athena; and an australorp, Jade. Last year a very broody MeiMei hatched a chick from the Easter egger and l got another rooster, Minos. My favorite aspect of raising backyard chickens is just being around the flock. They provide endless joy. I also live with my husband, my soon to be driving teenaged daughter, a 90-pound treeing walker coonhound, and a 9-pound tabby. I have been reading and accessing BYC since before I got my chickens and have decided to join the community because of my love for all things chicken
