I thought it would be fun to start a thread for those of us who have small backyard flocks (say, 10 or fewer). I have 3 golden comets, 20-22 weeks old and they stay in a tractor-style coop in our backyard. So far, 2 of the 3 are laying. I think 3 is the perfect number of chickens for our situation. We started out with 4 but one, sadly, died as a 2 week old chick.

Tell us about your small flock .....

I have ten pullets, almost 19 weeks old: two Easter Eggers, a Black Australorp, four Buff Orpingtons, a Cuckoo Marans, a Welsummer and a Buff Brahma. No one is laying yet although the BA looks like she might be getting close.

This is my first flock,so I am learning as I go!

This is my first flock too. I started with 6 chicks. Three BA pullets and 3 BO straight run, all of which ended up being cockerels, of course. Two became unholy terrors at 4 months and had to go. So now I have three laying BA pullets and one BO cockerel. None are lap chickens, but all will take treats from my hand.

The eggs are still small; 45-50 grams. Now, with the waning hours of daylight, there are fewer of them. I definitely want to have 2-3 more pullets next spring. Maybe a wonderful cross of BO over BA. I'll name them BuffAuses; you can say it however you like. :)

I would never have thought that chickens would have such different and interesting personalities. The things you learn. So glad I started this lesson.
