I am new here, and new to owning chickens. I am looking to purchase three, perhaps reds, to have as pets and egg layers. I do not know where to purchase them from, nor do i have a chicken coop. I do not want to spend a lot of money on a coop, but i want it to be safe and secure for them. I need some ideas on these things, in the Felton Delaware area. Thanks, Rosalie

First you might start by doing some reading in our learning center here on BYC so you know what you are in for. Lots of good reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry....

Then, you might check out our coops section. Lots of members have built coops from pallets or recycled materials for a pretty cheap price...

Most feed stores this time of year carry chicks. If you are only wanting layers, then make sure you are puchasing chicks from a pullet only bin and not a straight run bin where you can get roosters. You can also get chicks online from hatcheries such as My Pet Chicken, Chickens For Back Yards, Murray McMurray, Ideal, etc....
