Hello, a few weeks ago I found one of my female crested ducks (at least 3 years old) floating in our pond and she was unable to get out. After getting her out, I noticed her legs were outstretched behind her and she could not stand or walk. I kept her in the house in a 50 gallon tub and gave her a dropper of nutri-drench and she seemed to recover. A week after that the same thing happened to one of my female pekin ducks (a year and a half old). It only lasted about 1-2 days and they were back to normal. At the time, I thought it was because it is mating time for ducks and we had significantly more males than females. I have moved all the males except the two that never seem to bother the girls to another run so they have had no contact with the female ducks. However, yesterday that same crested duck was in the water with the same problem as she had two weeks ago. Her legs were outstretched behind her and she could not swim or get out of the water. She seems okay now that she has been in the house overnight but I am concerned because if it happens again there may be no one to get them out of the water and they may drown. I have ordered some brewers yeast to add to their food as a niacin supplement, but from what I have been reading, that is mainly for the growth of ducklings. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what could cause the outstretched and limp legs. It is almost as if they are temporarily paralyzed. I am not sure if there could be some injury caused from mating or some kind of deficiency. I have four other females and (so far) they are perfectly fine. Has this happened to anyone else?
