Hey all, we have a question about if our field fence would keep full grown chickens contained. We plan on having a good size run but would like to let them free range in the nearly 1 acre back yard that is ringed with 6" square field fence. Here is what the fence looks like and the type.

I think you would need to put chicken wire inside that for about 2 feet high or so. A lot of chickens could walk through that.

Chickens would go through that like water; also if they *want* to fly over it, they will. (Will they want to? You can't really tell in advance very well. If it is inconvenient to you for them to hop the fence, they prolly will

Good luck,

I think that your fence is to big of holes. Along with chickens being able to walk through, racoons, skunks, or whatever could put their paw through and swat them or something like that. So a smaller hole fence would be better

Good Luck!

Thanks, that is pretty much what Donna thought. I think we will look at poultry netting at the bottom when we get to that point. We wouldn't let them roam at large unless we were around so I am not too worried about predators pulling them through. When we are not supervising them they will be in the run which will be made of hardware cloth.
