The pricing on Amazon for hardware cloth is fantastic! And free prime shipping is pretty sweet

I cancelled my Amazon Prime. They say it costs $119 per year, but they were charging me $132!! Not worth it. You can find items that are free shipping without the Prime membership.

Look on Craigslist for bargain chicken wire and hardware cloth.

I used some left over non-climb horse fence that has a 2x4 inch opening. Some years back, a fellow chicken farmer had a dog go right thru standard chicken wire fence. Also, I bury my fence about 6" or so, and keep a watchful eye for holes where a predator has attempted to gain access. West WA is an easy area for keeping chickens. You will enjoy!

Yep, it is interesting how many people don't realize that the sole purpose of chicken wire is to keep poultry in where you want them, or out of where you don't want them. Not real useful for keeping predators out of your chicken area. It does work to some extent, like covering a run to keep raptors from coming in but isn't good against canines and besides reaching through to snag a bird sleeping against the fence, I suspect a coon could break through given the desire.

I have to disagree with your view that chicken wire doesn't keep our predators. The only thing that has gotten through our chicken wire is bears! Dogs, fox, raccoon and coyotes HAVE NOT gotten in the run at all. We do have 2 feet of hardware cloth around the bottom of the run so possum hands can't reach in and strangle the chickens. I use an apron with rocks on top (we have tons of rocks around here) and nothing has ever dug in to the run either. We have seen all the above predators and people's stray dogs as well. We added electric fencing and are now predator proof, I hope!
