fencing

thanks woodlandwomen! I want to secure my donated fence with it for my run. Let me know how you install it. I know what you mean about other gifts instead of flowers. Give me a tandum of forest fine mulch and it makes me very happy. I think building my coop was my mother's day present. Maybe outside plants or shrubs to plant instead of cut flowers.

On our chicken tractor, the hardware cloth was attached with wood screws and washers, after a pilot hole was drilled, first. We have a lot of predators here and the housing portion of the tractor is open to the run portion. I didn't want the wire to be able to be pulled off by a night time predator. It is REALLY sturdy!

From what I can tell on this board, most people use staples to attach the wire to the frame of their run. I think the big fence staples you pound in are most secure. You can also attach the wire by sandwiching it between the frame and a strip of wood that you screw down.

I originally was thinking of using the big fence staples and just putting a few wood screws with washers as insurance, but my DH really warmed to the idea and did the whole thing with wood screws. He loves building with wood screws! It all kind of depends on your budget and how you like to do things.

Smitty's Farm, what kind of donated fence are you try to modify? We've used everything from heavy duty dog run panels to welded wire fencing attached to t-posts for chicken pens, over the years.

My brother in law gave us this chain link fence that is 6 ft tall. I think he used it for a dog kennel. I have 2- 20' panels and 2- 14' panels. One of the 14' panels has 3 gate doors. Great donation!
He also gave us some tin roof panels that we can use to have a partial roof over the run to protect them from rain, snow, sun, etc.
We'll have to wire the rest of the top to protect from chicken hawks. I want to use the galvanized hardware wire to go around the whole inside of run, sink into ground about a foot and toe it outward to protect from critters getting in and poor lil chickens sticking head in fence. I still have to cut pop door. Hubby finished putting shingles on coop roof this morn. Thanks for home Depot tip. I'll check ours tomorrow.

Smitty's Farm :

ratlummountain: Did you put your hardware wire on the inside of the fence or the outside?

it's on the outside of the dog kennel/chain link. to be honest i didn't even debate putting it on one side or the other, just was much easier doing it on the outside ...
