'Feral' Pheonix Flock

We did end up having to put the light baby down. He relapsed and didn't get better again.

Now the white chick is in trouble. We found him on the floor losing his feathers and skin on his neck. We don't know if it was a mouse or a hen that attacked him. Hoping he pulls through though.

Rooting for your chick!

And then there were two. We lost the white chick just now. Hoping that hen C goes back to her nest. For some reason that egg hatched earlier than the others so they still have a few days to go. May have been an egg from Hen B that got sat on occasionally or something. Both the regular colored chicks are doing just fine. Wondering if being white made him a target to the other two hens.

It's so hilarious to see the group now. My last girl is trying to make yet another nest (bless her heart, this is the fourth try in less than 2 months).

I have 3 hens caring for 2 chicks

My two new pullets are yet to be accepted and are picked on by all five originals.

On the awesome side, my Japanese I had as a last ditch effort had 4 hatch today 😂

Looks like 1 Spanish and 3 Pheonix eggs. 4 out of 9 she had as of this morning. One of the pheonixes was touch and go, he hatched after she left the nest and fell behind the nest so he was still wettish and chilled. He's now fluffed and happy.

Mama Jap had one under her, one that had fallen and 2 that had apparently moved into a other nest box and seperated. It was nervous, she doesn't really seem to realize what they are and one of them has been pecked on the ears rather harshly. She does seem to really like the one she had had with her at first and she doesn't care about the other 3 when they're under her.

I candled the other 5, and picked out 3 that looked the most viable. 2 had what I really think was shadowing when I looked and those 3 I gave her to try and finish off. She took them and brought them under so hopefully I have 7 tomorrow morning.

Pictures of the Japanese hen. No new babies, but still holding out hope.

In the one with multiple chicks, the Spanish is in the back.corner with his back towards us. Apparently he's shy

And thus my bold gal has gone broody again. Bless her heart, try #5 this summer. 8 Pheonix eggs and 2 added Sumatra eggs

The Japanese is hilarious to watch. She barely tolerated the Spanish chick that hatched with the pheonixes, pecking him whenever he's in sight and then letting him under her to warm up. The white on the other hand is her darling baby. She loves that one. The lighter marked Pheonix has pecks on his eara, a bit worried about that, but they're all doing well. #5 didn't make it and a 6tg tried to hatch but shrinkwrappef and didn't make it unfortunately so there was a grand total of 4 nout of the 10 eggs. Not bad for a first timer who probably should have only been given like 6 anyways because of her size

Lots of updates here!

Bold one got a new nest and hatched out lots of babies this time. 8 so far, including the first Sumatra chick Achilles (my Sumatra male) has ever gathered in 4 years.

I got a gal back I used to have when I got my first 4, and she's on a no set nest of almost 20 eggs now. All sorts of eggs, but the majority is phoenix

Well long time no see.

Hatching season has been over for about 2 months now, and will hopefully start up in a few more.

At current counts, I have 18 of these beautiful birds. 4 males, 14 hens. 1 male and 3 or 4 will be sold in May when they're mature and behaving better because of hormones.

I'm planning to buy some hatching eggs this spring to get more colors, especially now that I'm starting to get off ones popping up in the flock. Time to have genetic fun
