Feral Pigs

A couple of freinds take me out hunting hogs. We actually went Sunday. Didn't get one this time, but they rooted up all over, so they were definantely around. ( they went a couple of days before and got one, and we got another a few weeks ago.) They really do a number on the land. Tear it up. they tore up my own pasture this summer. They are good eatin'.

They sound tasty. I would hate to come across them when I'm alone, hiking. I have enough to deal with the feral geese and stray cattle/bulls I come across. They're a piece of cake compared to a wild hog.

Afraid they have been spreading for several years!... there have been hogs sighted or killed in almost every county as of last year. The problem is that they (DNR) won't losen up much on restrictions. You either have to have the pig in your yard doing damage (and only can discharge a weapon following the laws). You can shoot them if you have a CCW, or a minimum of a small game license. But I sure as heck don't want to shoot a hog with a 22, that'll just piss em off! If I start seeing signs of pig, I'll put up a trap. Shooting one, just moves the others to a new area.

even so they come back in about 2-4 week if there is a food source where you shot the first one the best is to imagine A 20 mile 30 mile circle around the group and trap inward on them beer and fresh corn have been the best baits I have used Creosote works pretty good too, snares and pen traps seem to work the best young and sows taste the best fresh, boars need to be farrowed and fattened up a bit

I wish our UK population was more stable. It's growing though

Here in Texas they are a huge problem. Last year when we were at a state park we saw alligators and lots of pigs. We saw at least three sows all with huge litters of between 10-15. This is in broad daylight on a holiday weekend with lots of people around in a park with apex predators (even though they stay near the water). They are hard on anything that is ground nesting.

OMFG ! (read as Oh my Flipping Gosh ! )

stevo ! You have one massive and happy friend thier ! rofl ! Brilliant ! What a BEAUTY !

As to the "Wild boar issue". IMHO they are the "Ancient Guardians of the forrest" and where it is historicaly/enviromentaly to have had them, they should be made "Re-Naturalised" and therefore protected in the UK.

Make money by hunting them ? sure. NP. But it will make this little island nation see nature in a new light. Respect the "country code" (As we call it in the UK) more for sure. Another nation might find it hard to see what I'm saying.

In Germany Boar can be found in derelict brown sites in suburban Berlin (My brother-in-law tells me) and are not a problem unless you speed through the city at night

lol.

As for agriculture ? imho it's a mater for managing. The local farmers would exterminate Badgers due to "the TB lnk" .... I still want Badgers. In fact I want nature, generaly, preserved in this over populated Isle. But.... imho ... where America and others have the blessing of a wonderfull expanse of land that will take generations to fill to the point we have, we are full..... natures disrespected, marginalised, considered a nuisance.

Whoops.... sorry... I'll step off my preaching stool and apologise. All this rambling is ... JMHO
