fermented feed with young chicks

Just got a few silky chicks and the breeder recommended fermented feed. I have gotten a nice bubbly batch going and they love it, but here is my dilemma --- the chicks have it all over themselves! I've only got 4 babies, so I just put the feed in a little dish (actually, a ceramic ingredient prep cup from the kitchen;-) in the brooder, but somehow they manage to get it all over their chests. Mixing it with dry to the consistency of moist potting soil, but not helping! Is this a problem? They don't seem to be preening it off themselves, and food-mattd feathers seems like a bad idea. Any thoughts on a better feeder system?

I am curious about this too, would the food matted feathers lead to pecking? Good or Bad? If you feed fermented feed is it all or none? Can you feed what you have dry or fermented as its available?
