I ferment and I currently put their food in dog bowls, which usually ends up with wood chips in it from the chickens. I do wash them out every night as well.

-looking for ideas to get off ground, maybe a metal top chicken picnic table?
-what about going into winter and freezing

I use cat/small dog bowls since they're small which really discourages the chickens from walking in it. Easiest way to elevate them is simply put them on bricks. I have little brick "tables" all over for bowls to sit on.

If it's truly freezing then you'll either need to warm it up a bit before putting it out, and only put out enough that can be eaten quickly, or you'll need to use something like a heated dog bowl to keep it warm.

Found this here on BYC (I think!) a few weeks ago - might work for you. I use rain gutters, bc I had extras on hand at the time.
