FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

I have bad news. I can't get chickens this spring. This year has been very hard on me financially. I took yet another blow when I read my mail last night. Another huge payout. My year started with paying the insurance deducible for a new roof and went downhill from there. I have never had such an expensive few months!

I'm going to start working on my coop this fall/winter and be already for chicks next spring.

I have been wanting to get chickens for over 5 years and when I bought this house a year and a half ago I finally had the yard that allowed it.

I am seriously bummed.

I am so sorry!! I know that feeling all too well. It's amazing how fast a year goes. Just stay on BYC and plan your coop and think about all the great years you will have with your chickens. Time will fly by! :)

Good for you. It will work.
Getting the media involved works well for us.
Be a good chicken husband and neighbor. In a year, they may loosen the apron strings.
What gets me is that cities already have nuisance ordinances. That should suffice.

2 points.
City councils and mayors are usually either people that have no awareness of animals or grew up on farms with big nasty coops out back that no one ever cleaned and they can't imagine living next to that.
Out of the 100 largest cities in the US, 93 allow chickens. It is the smallest and poorest cities that are most likely to disallow them.
The richest cities in our county have no restrictions on fowl.

I live near a suburb of the State's largest city. The big city allows some chickens. The suburb I live near does not. This used to be a farming community ... now it's a dormitory for Intel & Nike, etc. the city council doesn't want to handle neighbor disputes and believes chickens will cause more disputes. You can buy a permit, but they are crazy expensive.

Thank you for all the well wishes and encouragement. I'm not giving up. I am crazy stubborn at times and this is one of them. I will have chickens!

Don't know how you feel about recycling, dumpster diving, material scavenging, etc. but a person can put together some really cute and functional coops with just materials they have gotten for free or very, very cheap and also fencing materials. I think those kind of coops are more fulfilling anyway because you have to put more effort into them and they hold a piece of your ingenuity and creativity. Paint covers a multitude of sins.

You can really get into chickens rather cheaply if you set your mind to it and then, after that, just add chickens. Doesn't have to be expensive chickens and then you can feed FF, which will cut costs even further. Other equipment can be made very cheaply as well, so just call on us if you get stumped on ideas on how to get or make something for your chickens cheap or for free.

:)

I'm already doing that.

I'm hoping these huge (over $500 at a time) payments that keep popping up with stop very soon. None of them have been expected. :/ I've been hit hard every month this year. If it keeps up I don't know what I will do. I'm single and I already work two jobs to make ends meet....

I prayed for you when I read this! I'm confident the Lord will work it out for you, bless your heart!
