FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Most excellent!  Thank you!!!!!!  :bow   Folks have been bugging me for quite some time to do a page like this but I've just never gotten around to it.  I'm bookmarking this and will be referring all newbies with the same old questions and a reluctance to read up to your blog.

******I skimmed it and the only thing I would write differently is that it doesn't have to be stirred twice a day or even once a day if you don't want to, so you might want to change that.  I recommend to stir just to keep the mix gassing off easily and to keep the top moistened if you are using a dryer mix.*******

Here's a list of all the things we've found or have been reported as pros and cons to FF....feel free to use it on your FAQ page!

Great! Will add that tomorrow at some point when I get a break in the action.

I can edit the stirring bit- had a picture posted today or total nasties- she had not stirred for a few days while she was gone and it was molded (like, black and green looked like in her pics) on the top of her jar and the jar lid.

Do you mind if I edit and say, "Bee says, "..........." "?

How about that last part c& pd in as, "Bee's list of points I forgot"? :D

How about we say stir at least once a day when ambient temps are very warm and humid? And you can quote me!

I only stir mine once a day right before I feed and when I'm gone for days it doesn't get stirred at all and it doesn't grow mold but it does grow the fuzzy white yeast.

Read it. Liked it. One more question though. May have missed it, because I'm awake at 3 in the morning, coughing my head off. Do you just take out what you need and then add that much back plus more water or do you have more than one container fermenting at a time at different stages?

Yes and no. Yes, you take out what you need. Some folks refresh as they go- I do not because I want a stronger ferment.

When I get down to about a single serving left, I backslop- add water, stir, add feed, stir, let it sit overnight and it's ready to feed in the morning.

Most excellent! Thank you!!!!!!

Do I have to stir it?
I do. I like to mix it all around; making sure my SCOBY gets consistently distributed throughout the batch. I know folks who don't, and have no issues. I've heard of folks who didn't stir the initial ferment for a few days and ended up with some black and green mold. I don't quite know how that happened, since it usually takes a lot longer than 2 days to get mold, but it was some ugly stuff.
How about, there is no harm in stirring. If you have a very dry mix, stirring helps keep it moistened. In my case, as you'll see in pictures below, I usually end up with a juicy layer in the middle, which I like to mix around to even out the consistency before I feed.
