FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

I would love to live in either of your shoes , but only part time. My wild side craves being near wildlife (as a young person my dream was to become a vet and then be a zoo curator who got to take the baby tigers home to bottle feed when the mother regected them. Unfortunately I feel in love with a Mexican bullfighter while a freshman at Univ. of Texas and ran away to Mexico. So ended the dream.) Anyway, I am an animal person who would like, most of the time, to live out in the country with llamas, emus and assorted animals. But I am too old now to want all that work so satisfy my need with the lowly chicken.
Bee, I had this picture in my mind of you. Now I must change it I think. Jules?? That's a guy's name, right? Or are you a gal with a guy's name? I love you which ever you are, just wanted to know. : )

I'm a gal!

Short for Julie, which everyone understands is a way too fussy and sissified name for me to wear, so everyone who knows me well calls me Jules or Jule.

Hi, welcome to this totally awesome site!  The people on here are so user friendly and readily share their knowledge.  Be sure and google all the breeds to get the ones that are egg intensive and sweet/docile if you have kids and aren't planning on a money making deal.  If you have hawks, don't get silkies, bantams or polish because they are too short to run fast, can't see or can't fly.  Of course you can have only a handful of chickens and keep them in a totally closed coop and run, fully protected from above and below.  Much more labor intensive but doable and well worth the effort and expense once you have fallen in love with your chickens,  it is heart breaking to have one eaten.    Those etc., etc.???  I'd like to know how many more palitable ff are out there that you find doable and tasty.  Yogurt and sourkraut sure, kefir I think is like buttermilk, ff garlic??  I don't know.  Kimchi I personally find nasty,  what else is there?  I know they are sooo healthy we all should be eating them.   THX  : ) beverly

Yep, been lurking the site for a couple months but already knew I was getting Barnevelders and Malines. Hub is dutch and his dad is pleased as pickles that I want Barnies as he had the growing up in Holland.

FF for people is amazing. i have all kinds of foods on the go. Try garlic fermented. Intense garlic flavour and lasts a very long time (much linger than fresh) and you can use it the same way as fresh. I use kefir instead of buttermilk in all kinds of things like bisquits, marinades, cakes etc and it is also a fantastic smoothie base. Very refreshing on a hot or hectic day. Sourdough bread is a FF and apparently makes the gluten in bread much more digestable for those who are sensitive. Sandor Katz is my guru on all thing FF -- look him up for some excellent ideas (and kimchi is fantastic if you like spicy! )

Although I think I would have made a good man if I had been born one....

Well for me, I'm glad you're a gal! And it is great to know that in a man's world you could hold your own! I'm not tooo much of a "ball basher" after having two bad husbands and two bad lovers! (I decided that I needed my head "shrunk" for always selecting so badly but could not afford that so just avoid them in general.)

It sounds beautiful and amazing there ak rain. Maybe your deep litter will start keeping more warmth because you don't flip it. What are normal lows at night for January?

It always amazes me how adaptable Gods creations are. I grew up with ohio weather. COLD winters and hot summers. Now I live in San Diego and I have so adapted to here. I feel so cold now at 40 degrees. My sister who grew up in ohio with me, lives in Tucson and she starts shivering at 65 degrees. Everything is relative.

THX, shall look up Sandor Katz and will try kefir. I am a sedentary gal who is about 20 pounds overweight so no breads, biscuits or cakes for me. I am going to get the 20 off before it becomes permanently attached! : )
