Tikki, you might want to try adding some paprika to our black mare's feed, it helps keep them black. If you've ever tried Black as Knight  it is mostly paprika. Sam's had large canisters of it for good price. We don't have a Sam's close, so I buy the little jars at Dollar Store or Grocery OUtlet  a dollar or less. Only takes about 3-5 TBSP. I feed about 2-3 in winter, and 4-5 in summer. Helps brighten all coats, but also helps with sun bleaching. If you show, it needs to be discontinued because for testing it does show up. I can't remember how long before, but it is on the internet somewhere.

Interesting. We don't show and we don't really care, lol, it's just something interesting to us. I wonder what's in the makeup of paprika that would have that effect.....

Whoa!! Huge Scifi fan here...started with Ray Bradbury so many years ago....paid to see Star Wars 13 times (before it was available commercially), swore at the time someday I would own the movie. HIgh school was Star Trek, old series looks hokie now, but still love it. Spock my fav. Really looking forward to your labors Perchie.....

Quote: I may have been in line with you.... Saw it about the same amount of times. LOL.... Trek too ALL years. Babylon five I have all five seasons... I like the nitty gritty style of Strazynski. Some of Bradburys stuff was surreal for sure. He lived here in San Diego. I missed an opportunity to go to a lecture by him in 73 or 74 for Science Fiction as Literature class....

This is soo off topic. PM me if you want.

I'm new to fermenting food and just started giving it to my girls this week. I just mixed some of their crumbs with water and let it set for one day, then started using it. They love it. Question I have is some of their poo is black and someone has the runs today. Is this from the change in their diet. I still have their food available dry for them too. I've also been using cayenne pepper for the first time for 4 days this week. But backed off on that when their poo started changing colors. Wasn't sure how long you could give them cayenne pepper. Was only giving them about a 1/2 tesp once a day for 6 chickens. I have really enjoyed learning about fermented food on BYC. Thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge and experience.
