Thanks. What kind works best? Crumbles? Pellets? I read an article that said whole grains work best, but when I asked for it at TSC, they only knew of scratch grains being whole grain. Not feed.

Yeah, TSC doesn't carry the whole grain stuff. I used to get mine at a local feed store, but I've also ordered it off Amazon and Chewy.

I found it would get kinda gross if I left it out. But maybe it's my climate?

Very possibly. We generally don't get super hot or humid conditions. So if my birds are slow to eat it (like on rare occasions they knock it over and forget about it) it's still fine for them by the time I uncover it hours later.
