Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

You want me killing them softly with my song? Cause that's what would happen...but not so softly.

Cruel and unusual punishment, that.

You need to talk to the Asplundh guys and see if they will dump on your land! Another person to talk to is the lawn service guys that rake up leaves and then have to pay to dump them off at the landfills. Free is good! They do all the work and you get the benefits...and the bags they use are the BEST! I reused them for my own trash needs because I can't afford to buy bags that nice...freecycle!

Maybe it didn't work due to ventilation? That's the usual reason for deep litter to not work out.

Great ventilation. I thought because there is no real drainage it became too nasty. As for Asplundh, they cut just about everything and I don't want to put any green bedding down. I suppose I should mention that that company and I are just at the shooting stage of a serious disagreement. They thought they were coming on my property and spray poison right where my poultry and goats graze/browse and they tried to do it by cutting a lock on one of my gates. We're not on good terms.

The pine shavings are reasonable but certainly not free. They are very easy to store and always available so the convenience is worth something. Thanks for the hints!

That would certainly tick me off too....

Did you post a sign 'No Spraying'. I see that around here quite a bit.

Lisa :)

On the subject of deep litter - I've used hydrated lime or ag-lime. I sprinkle it on top & then fluff with a manure fork. Add more bedding as necessary. I do this once a week in the winter months to help dry it out. You could also throw a bit of scratch or BOSS in there & let the birds do the work. ;)

No Lisa, I didn't. Around here, a locked gate and NO Trespassing sign used to mean something. They should have come to my house and 'try' to get my ok...which would have not been forthcoming. I told the crew boss that if they stepped on my property for any reason, I'd kill them and I told the supervisor the same thing on the phone. They are trying to get me for terrorist threatening. These people are apparently from some other part of the world because they don't know how the 'rule of law' works in Randolph County, most of West Virginia and likely many other places in other states. It's not who you know but rather who you support for re-election.

Free source? I wish. I get it from Tractor Supply but I do get a pretty deep discount because I buy 1 ton at a time.

I tried deep bedding a couple times but for some reason it just didn't work out for me. Some reason...BS..I know

what the reason is, or I suspect I know. I have concrete floors. These were used as dairy barns originally but that does

make machine cleaning quit simple. I hire a young buck to cut and dump the bags. The birds do their own spreading, far

than we could and they love the job!!
I have read several places that deep litter method really only works on an earthen floor......I can't quote references but I know that is what I read because my first thought about it was that my barn would work well because it was originally purposed for horses and has the earthen floor.

Spoken like a true West Virginian! Sorry...but the world is encroaching on our world here in the mountains and it's name is "city folk". They don't know the old rules of tooth and claw and they will stomp all over your rights to turn the countryside into what they want it to be, irregardless of how you feel about it. It's sad but it's happening nonetheless, as the yuppies move onto the old farms and what used to be farm kids play on their cell phones and want to live in town. We are dinosaurs soon to be extinct.

No doubt, change is coming and not for the good as far as I'm concerned. But I do think we can hold out for as long as I continue to live and after that....there's not much I can do about it.

That's what I've been told, but I tried anyway.
