Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Quote:
Be careful on the fish meal. A friend of mine picks up this stuff in 30 gallon barrels down at the pogey plant and the chickens will go nuts for it. It definitely ups the protein but there is a point you have to stop (and I don't know what it is). If you overfeed the fish meal the meat will definitely taste it. The eggs will also but not as bad as the meat. Not sure if the one you can get at feed stores has been cut down with anything but if it is straight it is quite pungent. FYI
That's why I have stayed away from the fishmeal. It would be really good for them but I'd hate to mess up and end up with things too fishy. I have heard that flax can make the eggs taste fishy. I'm feeding the recommended limit of 10% but so far no funny taste in the eggs.

Probably because fish isn't exactly their natural diet!

Not really something they'd be foraging out in nature unless they haunted the quays and fishing docks or picked dead fish off the beach or stream banks.

That would be interesting! You ought to show us some pics when you get that done and let us know how well they lay.

I figure a person could make a good bit of money off of those frizzle bantams...they look like the kind to appeal to the pet crowd. They are kind of cute if you like that sort of thing.

I"ve always wondered about a WR and BA cross bird...how they would look and lay.

Got to buy a camera first. I'm sure they would be great. The roo passes color to daughter, hen to son. I'm not sure about sex link on these. But others: Black Star is RIR or New hamp. roo x Barred hen.
Red Star/ Red sex link is RIR roo x White leghorn hen or pullet
Cherry Eggers is RIR X New hampshire hen 200-280 eggs yr
Cinnamon Queen is New Hampshire roo X Silver Laced Wyandotte hen 200-280
Golden Comet is New Hamp roo X White Rock hen 250-320 (wow)
another Red sex link is RIR rooX RIwhite OR Production Red roo X Delaware hen
Ambers is RIR roo X White rock hen
Hybrid used for meat is White Rock roo X Cornish hen (not CX)
Another Delaware X Hampshire (Indian River Cross) is Delaware roo X New Hamp hen 200-280 you can switch it up with New Ham roo X Delaware hen but it won't be a sex-link but good eating.
RIR roo seems to be the best. Red Sex link with a Delaware, Black SL with a Barred Rock, Red Star with a white leghorn. But New hamp can be subbed.

We get an excellent price and free shipping at purely poultry. Funny is they drop ship and our chicks arrive from different hatcheries so I called the hatcheries they actually came from thinking it'd be cheaper to go to the source...it wasn't! Almost .75-1 dollar more direct. Huh but we like them so far :)
Got a question.  I will be ordering from Hoover's hatchery in Rudd, Iowa.  They have great prices.  Is it necessary to vaccinate with Mareks's if I will be using FF?  :idunno

I don't know that FF has any capabilities to prevent Marek's other than improving overall immune system health. I've never gotten any vaccinations for chicks or birds in my chicken life, so not sure if it's even needed unless you've had Marek's in your flocks before and don't want to get it again?

I had my hatchery chicks vaccinated, but none of the ones I or my broody hatched....

I caught mine yesterday swimming in the pond like ducks bobbing for fish. Then the temp dropped and I had to go chisel them out of the darn pond! Really! hehehe

I've ordered from McMurray and Meyer and liked both - good service. I did have the ones I ordered vaccinated for Marek's. I hear there is now a vaccine for cocci. I believe I would get that one unless I hear something bad about it.
