Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Te, these were 24/7 CXs.... The only reason they made it this far was because that feed was dry scratch an severely nutritionally incomplete so they never developed all the size of the a normal CX. There was not an exceptional amount of fat on them, though.

That's interesting. Do you know how old that one was when you killed it? I believe I have read that feeding too much energy can cause a fatty liver too. Sure does make ff look good huh? Of course you don't know if the other bird's livers were in as bad of shape as that one but if they were and ff healed them that fast, that is really amazing.

Hello everybody. I hope you and yours are all doing okay, birds too. The weather broke here yesterday. Now it is in the high 30's and raining. Three of my roos suffered a little frostbite, working on that. Another roo has come down with a sneeze, working on that too.

It got in the low 40s here today but very damp cold...this is certainly hard on the stock, I tell ya! My birds came out of it just fine and even started laying in this cold snap, were out foraging all day and look none the worse for wear. It helps that I don't currently have any birds with large combs and wattles as Toby was the only one of my permanent flock and all the cheap meat roosters are in the jar.

TW, sure hope you get those combs cleared up without any secondary infections going on.

Thanks Bee, me too. That is the scary part!

For reference, the other CXs had just as nice livers when opened up. :3

My chickens are doing much fine as well. I meant to move the rabbits back outside today but I didn't. Whoops. The chickens enjoyed a day outdoors scratching up whatever they could. The litter I put in the garage for them wasn't really soiled so it went into the coop and between that and the litter I added for the meat birds they are WELL bedded down.

My FF is restarted... I am going to move my chooks onto it for a while and try fermenting grass hays for them. So far I have been keeping it submerged under the liquid. I haven't had any problems thus far but we will see how it goes. Keep fingers crossed that the mold does not come back and I can do the crazy thing of feeding my chickens off of hay! XD

Hi TDubya.,. Just curious, what are you doing to treat the frostbite and the sneeze ?
