It IS like an addiction, isn't it? I've seen people who never do anything with technology get one of those phones and pretty soon they cannot leave their hands off of it. Even when they don't get cell service they will keep bringing it out of their pocket and caress it, fondle it, look at it, turn it on, off, back on.....I expect to hear them say, at any moment, "My precioussssssssssss!"
I worked in the telecommunications industry off and on for about ten years.... From the first years of the Brick, through the years where satellite connection was going to be the be all end all for cell connections... (that one proved to be too expensive except for emergency or governmental use). Through all that I never had a cell. I even recieved a cell phone as a bonus gift at one company for finishing a job ahead of schedual. I never activated it. I still have it though somewhere??? I finally broke down and bought a pay as you go one when I was searching for a job and it was a requirement to put your cell down as contact. The ONLY reason I wanted it was it had voice mail.C'mon! You've noticed it too, haven't you?My niece says it's her "worry stone" and she doesn't like to travel anywhere she cannot get cell service. If she does she is still constantly pulling out her phone and checking 100 times to see if the service magically arrived, then she will sit and stroke the cover of the phone as if to soothe it for its loss in service, then she will gently put it in her pocket...only to pull it out in the next 5 min. to repeat this ritual.![]()
I asked her about it and she says it's her "worry stone" that she must rub all the time. She also displays the same behavior as an addict who needs a fix...she paces, she jiggles her foot, is restless, is anxious, angry, volatile and morose until she gets cell service once again.
And it's not just her...I've seen this in my sister, my son, his wife and in people at work. It's almost universal in how they act about their cell phone. It's kind of scary. It's like a tiny idol that they keep in their pocket and they've bowed their heads to over and over throughout the day.
Said in your best Peter Lory voice, right? It IS like an addiction, isn't it? I live in area where dial up is the only option and sometimes that is questionable, but I do have a just bearily there 4g signal if the wind blows the right way. So I use my phone to enjoy the videos and pictures that ya all share. Videos take forever to download on dial up. Am I addicted to my phone nope.
