Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

are you feeding your cornish 1-2 times a day to get them to free range so late in the game? or are you doing the 12 hours feed on and 12 hours feed off?

I feed mine a meal in the am and a meal in the pm. They also get at least one hour of free range time am & pm. They are only fed what they can clean up in 10 minutes or so.

Beekissed is set up where hers can free range all day while guarded by her dog. She free ranges hers all day then feeds them only when they return to the coop in the evening.

Thats good to know on the 10 minute rule. I talked to Bee about her FF project, and am getting ready to do that with the next batch. I was going to build something to let them out in, but since they are moving so well, maybe I will buy like that green garden fence thats 2-3 feet tall, and just run a long strand of that along my hot fence for the cows and let them have at it.

You will LOVE raising them that way AND you will have happy, healthy, active birds clean up to the end. Oh and yep "clean" too because they don't set around in their own poop all day. You will also get to raise them longer which will give them more of the taste and texture of a traditional old time bird instead of the 6 week old babies that we buy in the store and eat in restaurants. I tell ya, I have grow too attached to the birds I have. They are the sweetest acting friendliest birds I have had and I never even tried to tame them. Going to make it hard to kill them.
At about 7 weeks mine kept climbing this 8' ladder. Had to move the ladder. lol

I did keep their feed up on top of this 4' tall pen until I was ready to feed them. Before long they were big enough to fly up their and get to it. Just in the past week or two they have got heavy enough that they can't fly up there BUT they go around to the side and fly up on a doghouse they climb on up there. They are really some characters! LOL

Here's another, when they are older and not so frantic to get to the best foraging places....

I could live with this! What I have problems with (for myself only) are the Cornish Xs that are kept in those large houses and languish in their own misery. Heck, I wouldn't mind 'free-ranging' here, if someone would bring me a glass of sweet tea once in a while.

I tried them with the sweet tea but then they wouldn't stop following me around, so we went back to water......CX are tea junkies...ya really can't let them have a taste or they are hooked.

They will set in your lap and look at you like this...! hahaha
