Mine formed ice on the top did not freeze solid, but my container is quite large, we had a very mild for us winter and our winters are a walk in the park compared to yours. I just broke the ice and fed it out when the sun came out and shined on the black trash can it was still fermenting. Don't really think that would work in your area w/ your winters, but yes it does freeze.

I'm not too worried about the buckets. It's the feed that is out for them to eat I'm worried about. I am away from the farm from 7:30 am - 5:00 pm - so if it froze, they would have nothing to eat.

I am going to put mine is small plastic container & set that in a heated dog water dish so mine doesnt freeze. That way I can take container in at night to fill it for the morning. Plus its warmer when they eat it. But I only have 4 hens to feed so I can use the smaller heated dish

It would work if I didn't have so many birds :p

Going to have to create a massive cookie-tin heater! :gig

A nice, double layer of bubble wrap would make an excellent insulator for the FF bucket. I'm using hay but if I didn't already have that going on in my coop, I'd use the bubble wrap...and I may still use the BW because of the hay debris getting in my mix. Already found out that I do not like that...I know, more greens, but the hay I have is old and non-nutritious so it just messes up my mix.

Having hay in there would tick me off too! Bubble wrap is fun. @_@
