Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Do you know what I've noticed? My local feed supplier had a terrible outbreak of weevils this summer. Weevils were in all their grain products but NOT in the chicken lay rations, even though this is also a grain product. If birds won't eat the GMO stuff, given a choice, I'm beginning to think that bugs won't either, given a choice.

If not beer, then could I use any old vinegar, with a mother in it, or does it have to have apples, too?

I've been feeding my chickens FF for a while now due to this thread. Thank you I'm loving it!

I have red broilers that are 3 weeks and they have been on FF since day one. Within the last 4 days I've noticed orange poos. Is this normal? They are the color orange no joke. Thanks for your help.

Makes you think - if they won't eat it, should we be eating it?

Welcome. When I watched it I thought it was a concise presentation that I could direct someone to if they had an interest in reasons why people avoid GMO.

I put it on my facebook page too. Hopefully people will take the time to watch. Easy to bury our heads in the sand about this stuff. It's pretty scary when you think about long term consequences.

I have a question, I ferment in the house with a 5 gal. bucket with a 2 gal inside of it, with a heavy towel across the top, well I am seeing tiny little flying bugs in the house and this morning when I got the ff up out of the bucket to drain I didn't see any bugs in there but when I took it outside in the dish there they were crawling on the ff, not alot but enough to see, has anyone else had a problem like this, They are the same bugs that were in my compost bucket in the kitchen about a month ago, got rid of them by dumping the bucket of compost and washing out the bucket. Am I destined to have bugs flying in my house with the ff in here?

So, I have a question. I just traded a cockerel for a one year old hen a couple of days ago. I have her isolated right now, but I noticed that she has some slimy looking reddish stuff in her poo. I started her on fermented feed right away. Does anyone have any idea about what it might be? Do I need to do more than FF and vinegar water for her? What about diatomaceous earth - would that help? I definitely don't want this in the rest of my flock. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks.

I have mine in the house, with an actual snap on lid, and haven't had any gnats. But, when I did a bowl on the counter of compost stuff, I had a lot. I'd suggest a tighter lid, with tiny holes for circulation.
