Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Well, I'm going to jump on the bandwagon here. I've got two flocks, one is a mixed breed/age group of 14 almost 2 year hens and almost 1 year pullets and the other is 6 Brahmas. I think I've gotten lucky with my roosters. Mr. Feathers, the EE, challenged me when he was about 16 weeks old, I reprimanded him, and he's never tried again. He's real good about being alert when the hens are ranging about the horse pen, but is it weird that he goes to bed about an hour before the hens do? The other cockerel, Blackberry, is really sweet. Huge, too. He rarely crows at all, follows his ladies closely and is the last one in at night.
We clean out the fridge every week, so the chickens are used to getting piles of slop, so to speak. Yesterday was the first time I gave them some of the FF (layer food, oatmeal, BOSS & a little bit of alfalfa & calf manna). The mixed group attacked it like they always too - I think competition helps here. The Brahmas just circled the pan, probably thought I was trying to poison them. I'll have to see this afternoon if they ate any of it.
I'm setting a couple of eggs aside and in 2 weeks, I'll do a comparison. Can't wait to see if there is a difference or not.

I just took a new batch of ff out to my flock after tossing the old ff yesterday, Well I just found out first hand there was diff something going on with the old batch, They have jumped on this new batch like it's ice cream, even the ducks are eating it. Maybe they don't like it 100 proof.

sure smelled 100 proof.
Now I'm blown away, my gander who is about as picky as any kid can be is out there eating the ff with my goose. Must have gotten this batch just right.

I have to agree...mine don't seem to enjoy the super fermented stuff either. They like it just pleasantly fermented...I guess chickens have discerning palates.

I didn't dump mine..I just started watering it down and removed the mix from a very warm room into a cooler place. Problem solved.

Well there wasn't that much left in the bucket so I don't feel I wasted much, just so pleased to see just about all of them eating the ff. Worth it .

I'm pretty sure I've seen others mention this, but I don't mind repetition, hope you all don't either.
If I didn't know better, I'd say my flock has stopped drinking water since starting the FF. They're alive, so they must be drinking, but it's hard to tell just looking at the waterer. It wasn't an immediate change, but they've really tapered off the last couple weeks. I'm not worried, between the FF and all the juicy green grass they eat everyday they're getting plenty of water. (and I do see them drink occasionally)
Anyway, just an observation.

I had another one of those 'ponderings' the other day Bee, but now I can't remember what it was....it will come to me.

I'll wait to hear about your pondering..... Mine barely drink either but I'm assuming it's because of the moisture in the feed, the increased absorption due to healthier intestines and also better renal function due to the better overall health.

I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but for those of us who've never done it, can we have a quick run down on how you prepare your own FF, keeping it nice and simple for us newbie chicken owners and with the possibility that those of us Down Under might not be able to source the same things as you can in the US. Ta muchly!!!!!!

My birds hardly drink too! I have a 2.5 waterer that they would empty in 2-4 days in the summer and in winter it takes them 6 days!
Now... I have had to reduce to filling it 1 gallon at a time - taking them 4-6 days for the whole gallon!

Then i remembered how much water the feed "sucked up" when I made the 1st batch of FF!
