Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Oregano is a fast growing periannel out here Mumsy, it is always spreading and I have move it and control it,

For those who plan to plant it, what works nicely to keep it from taking over EVERYTHING like a jungle is to use the largest clay pot you can find minus the bottom tray, sink it down into the ground so the lip is above ground, and grow your oregano in there. Works for mint and other great herbs that are a bit aggressive.

Good tip, I'll be doing that this spring.

Costco oregano $4.39 for 190g

Edited to add Canadian price

If your ever up for trying it. We want to try making our own ACV next apple picking season if we can :D. Its supposedly decently easy to do
I bought the Sterling ACV and added U-ACV and grew the mother in that, as it is the same price for a gallon as it is for a tiny bottle. It worked well. Smells very strong.

You know that FF heater I showed you? I accidentally built that around my last bottle of ACV, and it's stuck behind my closet. LOL I was very angry about it :p

Did anyone ever get any results feeding FF to their dogs? I told my wife I wanted to try fermenting the dogs food and she looked at me like I had a third eye in the middle of my head. I told her I'd ask around before trying it.

Thanks,

I just asked this on another thread too! this is what was posted so far....

Sally, for dogs it is the same process.
Sturgis, my dog went to FF because I couldn't keep him out of the chicken's FF. Good coat/skin. Prevents/helps digestive problems. Soak it for about 2 days, and when it bubbles (BUBBLES!!) it is ready.

I'm doing the 2-bucket system with about 3 day's worth of feed(I use 24% gamebird feed with 8%scratch grains, 50:50 which equals about 16% protein.)  They like the whole grains and it keeps the holes in the bucket from clogging.  I have now added an extra 3rd bucket to which I use some of the fermented liquid in the bottom bucket to start 3 more day's worth, then add food and water.  In the 3rd bucket. I keep the water level over the feed and it seems to ferment quicker.  So by the time I use up the top of the 2 bucket system, I just dump the 3 rd bucket contents into the 1st bucket and then start another 3rd bucket.  Or if I want to clean out the 1st bucket to make sure that the drain holes are open, I do that first.

Does anyone know if a wild rabbit can fit through chicken wire? Rabbits absolutely decimate my garden every year, so last summer I started covering the gap between the bottom of the wood privacy fence and the ground with 1/4" hardware cloth. Now I've almost run out of the hardware cloth and wondering if chicken wire will serve to keep the bunnies out.

I attach the hardware cloth to the bottom 6" or so of the fence with screws and fender washers, then dig a trench 4-5" deep and put the bottom of the hardware cloth in the trench and fill with fast-set concrete. That works really well, but of course I'm already seeing rabbits come through the few sections I haven't completed yet.

That's really good information.  Thank you for posting.  I will undoubtedly start using oregano in my feed now.  I have also been using thyme on occasion, not constantly but maybe once a week or so, as a preventive.  Cinnamon too?  I know that insects don't like cinnamon, is this the reason for feeding it?  So that it would repel mites and lice from the inside or as a repellant only for internal worms?

Sorry replying off of phone. Cinnamon is good for increasing appetite. Also good for circulation. I use it in my feed. As for the rabbit.. they burrow under make sure you are burying it a few inches in the ground. Also they are pretty high jumpers. Good luck. I have a rabbit to stir up my chickens.

I'd be happy to find bulk pasturized acv and make my own for lots cheaper but I can only find small bottles at one chain store.
I did try it with the litre size bottle and U-ACV and it worked. I should log that under 'things that excite me' ( I know I need a life lol)
